ESPADRILLES are rope-soled canvas shoes, commonly worn in Southern France, Spain and Italy. This summer they are back in fashion so why not try making your own. During this two-day workshop you will learn how to make espadrille soles with platted jute. You will shape and design the upper part of your shoe or sandal in calico and use your calico toile to make the pattern from which to cut your canvas uppers. You will be shown how to construct the uppers whilst adding design features such as binding, cotton inner soles, loops for ankle ties, buttoned straps and peep toes. You will hand-stitch the uppers to the rope soles in an authentic espadrille style blanket stitch and finish your shoes or sandals by attaching protective rubber bottoms. Once you have completed this course you will have developed the skills needed to make yourself any number of new styles of espadrille. No previous experience is needed for this workshop.
