CREATING GARMENT PATTERNS FOR THE FASHION INDUSTRY. When working in mass production deadlines are tight and short cuts are essential. Designers and pattern cutters will often use existing garments, both vintage and new, to make the patterns for next season's new styles. During this course you will learn how to take patterns from a selection of garments without deconstructing them. You will be introduced to traditional pattern cutting techniques such as dart manipulation, make a half-scale papier maché tailors dummy and use half-scale pattern cutting blocks to create and experiment with new styles. You will learn how to make patterns for collars, sleeves and skirts and design a collection inspired by a vintage garment of your choice. You will be introduced to fashion design development, learn how to assess what and how much fabric to use for toile production and complete the course by making a full-size industrial pattern and sample of one of your designs. Textile students and designers will be shown how to adapt these skills to produce garment shapes for textile design. This course is for people with dressmaking skills. If you would like to study pattern cutting but do not know how to make clothes, you may wish to enrole on Understanding Pattern Cutting.
