TEXTILE DESIGN for the fashion industry can be dipped into at any level but will always start with a thorough investigation of the international fashion textile market and the influence of couture designers on that market. Whether starting as a beginner or after a three year degree in textile design you will be encouraged to create a sketchpad of ideas and floral references that can either be used as part of a portfolio of work or developed into finished designs to be sold through a textile design agent. You will experiment with different fabric construction and decorative techniques, including felt-making, transfer printing, hand and machine embroidery. You will learn how to predict fashion trends, interpret a textile design agent's brief, experiment with
natural and synthetic dyes to create seasonal colour pallets, explore different image layouts including non-directional all-overs, borders and placements and if you are pursuing a career in textiles, produce groups of finished designs presented as flat garment shapes. If you have already studied textile design at degree level, your tutor will help you to find a textile design agent and support you whilst you start to work with them.
